As the colder months roll in, we all start to prepare our homes for winter, but one thing that’s often overlooked is your stairlift. Just like any other piece of equipment in your home, your stairlift needs a little extra care during the winter to make sure it continues to run smoothly and safely.
At Candor Care, we understand how much independence your stair lift gives you. So, whether you’re staying home or planning to go away over Christmas, here are some helpful tips and tricks to keep your stairlift in top condition throughout the winter months.
Keep the Power On
If you’re heading away for some winter sun or off to stay with relatives over the festive season, it might be tempting to turn off the power to save energy, but when it comes to your stairlift, it’s best to keep it switched on!
Your stairlift batteries need a continuous supply of power to stay charged. Turning it off at the mains can cause the batteries to drain, and over time, this can affect their overall lifespan. When you return, you could find that your stair lift doesn’t have enough charge to operate, which can be inconvenient and come at a cost to repair, even if your stairlift is in warranty or you’re on a warranty service plan with us.
Candor Care Tip: Always leave your stairlift parked on its charging point when it’s not in use. This helps maintain battery health and ensures it’s ready when you need it.
Keep the Area Clear
During the winter months, it’s common for clutter to build up around the home. Coats, scarves, gift boxes, and decorations can quickly pile up. It’s important to keep the area around your stairlift completely clear!
Items left on or near the track can lead to dirt and debris collecting, which might prevent your stairlift from moving smoothly or even cause it to stop working altogether. Clutter near the track or seat also poses a safety risk, small objects can get caught, potentially damaging the lift or causing an accident to yourself.
Candor Care Tip: Give your stairlift a quick check every few days. A soft, dry cloth can be used to wipe away any dust from the track.
Protect Against the Cold
Just like us, stairlifts can feel the effects of cold weather. If your stairlift is installed in a cooler area of the home, extreme cold can impact its performance.
Try to keep the surrounding area as warm as possible, and avoid exposing the lift to damp or freezing conditions. If your stairlift is fitted outdoors, it’s especially important to keep it covered when not in use and ensure it’s serviced regularly to protect against weather damage.
Candor Care Tip: If you notice your stairlift moving slower than usual during the winter, it might need a quick check up to make sure everything is running smoothly.
Book a Winter Service Check
Just like a car or a boiler, your stairlift needs regular servicing to stay reliable. Booking a winter stairlift service gives you peace of mind that everything is safe and ready for daily use.
Our expert and friendly technicians check the batteries, track and all moving parts to make sure everything is in perfect working order. This will help avoid any unwanted breakdowns during the colder months.
Candor Care Tip: If you want to see if you’re still in warranty, due a service or would like to know when we last serviced your stairlift, pop us a call and we’ll be more than happy to help.
