  • Curved stairlifts introduction

    A curved stairlift is one where the track is either bent to suit the profile of the stair or made up of modular bends.

    The seat is levelled either mechanically or electronically to cope with the change in angles or gradients of the stair and landings.

    Here are just a few of the common stair types possible to fit curved stairlifts on;

    Today’s curved stairlifts are extremely flexible and we are now able to fit a curved stairlift to most configurations, even complex spiral configurations as shown here;

    It is possible to fit a curved track stairlift on the inside bend of a staircase, as shown here.  This can sometimes be advantageous as it leaves the outer steps which are wider for ambulant stair users

    Like anything, there are advantages and disadvantages to fitting lifts on the inside or outside bend of the stairs, there are no hard and fast rules, each situation should be judged on its own merits.

    Curved stairlifts are more flexible than straight stairlifts, they can be designed to park clear of the bottom and top of the stairs as shown here, these configurations are referred to as parking bends;

    The vast majority of curved stairlift tracks are bent on specialised bending machines, each track is bespoke and therefore delivery is often greater than that of a straight stairlift.  Tracks which are manufactured from modular bends can often be produced quicker, however delivery is still longer than straight stairlifts.

Freelift - Van Gogh

Designed to fit on the outside bend of the stairs the ‘Van Gogh’ consists of a single tubular track, which is less than 8cm in diameter and available in 3 colours.  Each track system is individually designed to suit the shape and layout of your stairs and supports directly through the stair treads with the minimum amount of support brackets.

Complicated and steep stair layouts rarely pose a problem for the ‘Van Gogh’ it can offer many rail design options which enable you to park the stairlift clear of the stair, giving optimum space for other stair users.

The ‘Van Gogh’ is battery operated and charges automatically when it comes to rest at the top or bottom of the stairs or an intermediate parking/charging position is also possible.

A well designed automatic hinged rail enables doorways and passageways to be kept clear when the stairlift is not in use.  The control of this function is completely automated, it raises or lowers as the user ascends or descends the stairs.

The standard seat, the ‘Classic’ has an attractive leather grain effect finish, it is hard wearing and easy to wipe clean and comes in 4 colours.

Thyssen – Flow 2

The Flow 2 curved stairlift is extremely versatile, allowing installation on either the inside or outside curve of the staircase.

To maximise floor space at the top or bottom of your staircase, the Flow can be extended to park the lift around the corner, as below.

The Flow is battery operated and automatically recharges the batteries when it comes to rest at the top or bottom of the stairs, an intermediate charging/parking position is also possible where space is at a premium.

The unique folding action of the seat and footrest allow the unit to take up the minimum of space.

Where staircase width is a challenge, the ‘Advanced Ride Monitoring System’ of the powered swivel feature turns the chair and footrest to travel past the narrowest staircase sections.  It can be programmed to travel in a downward facing position which allows installation on staircases as narrow as 610mm!

Wrap-around arms provide added comfort and security
